Biodegradable punctal plugs are the small medical devices, inserted into eye-puncta to block the tear duct to prevent nasolacrimal drainage of tears for the treatment of many eye disorders. Marketed biodegradable collagen based punctal plugs lacks adequate hydration efficiency of tears, long-term stability and drug loading capacity. We propose to develop highly stable supermacroporous collagen I punctal plug with improved hydration, stability and drug releasing property. The proposed punctal plug having open porous structure and high elasticity, which can absorb large amount of water and prevent plug loosening. The developed punctal plug would also allow the direct loading of drug or by the incorporation of drug-loaded nanoparticles for sustained delivery of drug to relieve infection in dry eye disease.
