The myth that leather is a by-product of the meat processing industry is false; approximately 72 billion animals are killed each year for their skins, leading to extensive livestock rearing with adverse environmental effects like deforestation, excessive use of water and land, and gas emissions. Raw animal hides or skin chemically treated to become leather by tanning results in toxic wastewater effluent and solid waste, air pollutants, and exposes employees to dangerous chemicals that can cause cancer and render leather non-biodegradable. In order to do away with this, I want to produce a product called "Leather Alternative" that is made of agricultural waste and biopolymers that have physical and chemical properties that are similar to animal leather and is used in footwear, fashion accessories, automotive, and furniture upholstery markets so that my customer segments serve the demand for sustainable alternatives.
