Plastic represents one of the most essential and widely used materials in the world, having desired properties i.e. lightweight, low maintenance requirements, weathering resistance, transparency, and low price, which enables plastic applications in various industrial, commercial and agricultural activities. According to the United Nations, by 2020, more than 400 million tonnes of plastic waste will be generated annually and the production of plastics is expected to double by 2035 reaching 800 Mt. and 1600 Mt. by 2050. Most types of plastic are non-degradable and it takes centuries to fully degrade. The majority of plastic waste ends up in the water where it is ingested by marine life.
