Post-stroke disability is becoming alarmingly common in the working population. Patients become overly dependent on caregivers and cannot work leading to financial crises, isolation, and depression. Hand rehabilitation is crucial to enable such patients to attain socio-economic freedom. However, due to fewer trained physiotherapists, the complexity of the hand structure, and the tedious rehabilitation process, most patients do not fully recover in time. Conventional therapy is limited in providing rigorous and regular exercise practice, task-specific training, and continuous monitoring for feedback and motivation. Also, patients need to visit physiotherapy centers to use these systems, increasing the time and money spent. Therefore, most patients drop rehabilitation early without complete recovery. We are therefore developing a cost-effective virtual hand rehabilitation system that can be used at home to enable patients to recover faster.
