Shell sand is used for preparing high quality moulds for casting. We use a technology called Selective Powder Deposition (SPD) 3D printing for 3D printing shell sand. While we can achieve high quality moulds, the insulating nature of sand causes a problem. To solve this issue, I will develop a crucible with hot air heating. This crucible will be designed for the sole purpose of curing shell sand that is 3D printed onto it using SPD technology, eliminating need for expensive and energy inefficient furnace. This will replace existing crucible of SPD machine. The crucible will have a mesh on the bottom that is of finer sieve than the resin or silica sand. Experiment already conducted by me and my mentors as to the right type of static pressure and air velocity to ensure optimal conditions. Design will be to maximise thermal efficiency. With this prototype, we will be able to reduce the time and cost it takes to make 3D printed shell sand moulds by orders of magnitude.
