The proposed product counteracts the limitations of the currently existing hyperbilirubinemia detection strategies: Being a minimally invasive method, it eliminates the need for extraction of 3-5 mL neonatal blood for every round of testing. By eliminating the need for any sensitive chemicals or sophisticated instruments, it will be marketed as a bed-side test. It enables continual screening by the care-givers without having to stay at or regularly visit the hospitals. For this, we wish to propose a home-based kit using cost-effective paper-based device utilizing a single drop of blood. Same kit can also be used as primary health care centers also. The device is based on an induced turn ON response of a recombinant protein to emit fluorescence upon interacting with bilirubin in the sample beyond the permissible levels. The fluorescence activity can be rapidly recorded and instantaneously read out as safe or endangered levels of the target analyte.
